On the way to the site, (Fred) MacKenzie had learned that the holocaust in front of him had been the medical aid station for Combat Command B of the 10th Armored Division. […] To the war correspondent, it was bad enough to lose young men, but to hear that a young woman had passed away was even worse. MacKenzie later learned that her name was Renée Lemaire, daughter of Gustav Lemaire, a village merchant. She was a nurse, in a sense, tending to the wounded in the aid station. On Christmas Eve the Luftwaffe managed to conduct two bombing missions. The first went in at 7:45 p.m. and the second around 10:00 p.m. The first attack lasted approximately thirty minutes. [...] the aid station had been hit and destroyed. [...] Two direct hits had impacted the aid station setting the buildings on fire and causing them to collapse. [...] Located about a block away the 10th Armored Headquarters was also hit and soon engulfed in leaping flames. [...] Augusta joined Jack and the soldiers as they sifted through the rubble. [...] While Jack was rummaging around the charred and smoldering timbers he noticed a shock of dark hair protruding from the rubble. Jack dug down a little deeper with his bare hands and brushed the debris from Renée’s ashen face. He managed to get his hands under her shoulders and extract her from the carnage. [...] Jack then gathered Renée Lemaire’s remains together and wrapped them carefully in the silk parachute he’d been planning to give her as a Christmas present.
